money & ATMs

Exchanging money on Yakushima can be difficult, so it's best to come prepared. Also, rather than wasting precious time hunting down an ATM near your accommodation, we reccommend you try and bring enough cash for your entire trip. Don't worry about having to carry large amounts of cash around with you as Yakushima has to be be one of the safest places in the world.

When budgeting for your trip, please note that many shops, hotels and services on the island still do not accept credit card or cash card payments.

To withdraw money then our recommendation is to use a post office ATM.  The post office ATM's  accept a range of international bank cards – see the table below for details. There are 8 post office ATMs  scattered around the island (see map) and they are open from 8:45 to 18:00 on weekdays, and from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekends and national holidays.

JA bankThe JA Bank ATM's also accept VISA card withdrawals (see map at the bottom of the page for location) and there are 2 JA Bank ATMs both are open every day from 9:00 to 19:00.

The local Kagoshima Bank and Minami Nihon Bank are also marked on the map, but do not accept international bank card withdrawals.

There is no facility to exchange Japanese Yen back to a foreign currency on Yakushima.
